Relevance to Today - Sunday, March 22, 2009 5:25 AM The Lottery Relevance to today Today, we live in a very competitive society, which is related to The Living Conditions in The Lottery quite inderictly, but this relevance is quite significant indeed. In school or a workplace of each average Singaporean, there are many people who strive to be on top. However, a minority of them do not have any goals that they work to, and these people enjoy their lives freely and without the worries of their bosses or teachers in any way, and are also what we often call 'slackers'. My point is that these people are picked out from the rest of the group and then ostracised, and finally beat down like how the unfortunate people who were picked for the lottery were stoned to their deaths. This is the most relevant example of our modern day 'lottery', although there are some differences. Firstly, this form of lottery picks out its victims not by random, but by their faults that other's just cannot tolerate. In other words, this lottery picks out victims who partly or fully deserve this punishment. And of course, the person does not die. I will now list down some examples that have taken place right before my very eyes. Firstly, someone in my class has been cruelly ostracised because of his tendency to irritate people, and possibly his obesity. This has affected his academic results and his ability to tell who his true friends truly may be. Secondly, I have a boy in my tuition who has his arrogance the factor that he sits by himself in a row of tables, while the rest of the class is huddled together in unity. And lastly, I am not mentioning these people to make them infamous, but rather to awaken people to the reality of their actions, and also so I can finish my homework. However, these people may be so traumatised by all this bullying that they may grow up to be a serial killer, or even not grow up at all... I hope that humans will never be so heartless as to really resort to killing others to get rid of their daily annoyances, and that they can learn the value of tolerance. This society is becoming much more like what I fear it will become someday. |
